A home remodel fulfilled many of this client’s dreams but it also revealed the shortcomings of their outdoor spaces. The back yard has beautiful views of the golf course, and even out to the ocean on a clear day. However, they rarely used it due to the full sun and heat their concrete patio was exposed to. A front courtyard was usually used for entertaining but they also wanted to use their backyard with all of the wonderful views. After understanding the client’s goals, and carefully evaluating the site, a plan was developed to design a shaded outdoor room that extended off the back yard existing patio and eliminated the small unused lawn areas. Eventually, the design recommended that the existing concrete patio be removed to allow for a completely new experience and building materials. Today the client enjoys their backyard daily, often having lunch while viewing the golfers on the course. The once ugly slope below them is now successfully planted with drought tolerant yet colorful plantings. A vine covered patio cover now shades the extended entertainment area where a beautiful stone sofa and comfortable chairs with bright red cushions surround a coffee table height firepit. Roses, rosemary, and colorful perennials bring color and fragrance to this small yet now incredibly useful and beautiful backyard.
